One of our favorite horses: Sgt. Reckless! The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame is instituting a new honor, a Sergeant Reckless Award. In fact, the inaugural Sergeant Reckless Award winner is Robin Hutton, largely due to Sgt Reckless: America’s War Horse, her first book. Author Robin Hutton has reignited excitement about this legend, realizing the Sgt. Reckless Monument at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, and now overseeing the creation of a second memorial at Camp Pendleton, California.

A Mongolian mare who was bred to be a racehorse, Ah-Chim-Hai, or Flame-of-the-Morning, belonged to a boy named Kim-Huk-Moon. To buy a prosthetic leg for his sister, Kim made the difficult decision to sell his beloved companion. Lieutenant Eric Pedersen purchased the bodacious mare and renamed her Reckless, for the Recoilless Rifles Platoon of the 5th Marines.

This full biography of Sgt. Reckless includes interviews with the Marines who fought alongside her, revealing, at last, the complete and captivating tale of how a would-be Korean racehorse became one of the greatest Marine wartime heroes of all time.

Hutton will recieved the inagural Segreant Reckless Award at our Hall of Fame celebration in November, 2019. Read more, here.
